What does this site mean to you?

Posted 2 Weeks ago by Weird Occurance

I'm both curious and treating this as an icebreaker.

I know there's a thread pinned here asking who you are and one in Nostalgia asking about your history with GT, but I want to know - what does GT mean for you now?

What's the value you find in being here? Or in the discord?

What don't you like? (You can be honest)

What do you want to see from me? (Be honest here, too)

--

My answers, if you're curious -

Orig GT meant a lot to me. GTR, too. I spent as much time there as I could, but by the time GTX0 came around, I was heading off to college and, yeah, GT fell off my radar, minus checking in periodically. But I found I regularly thought about it and would pop back in until I eventually found myself staying at GTX0 for the last year or two.

My favorite thing about this iteration is the site is how it's been allowing me to get some of you all better.

I knew most of you through word of mouth and a few sparse interactions here and there, but I find myself actively reaching out and trying to get some feedback. And I appreciate how receptive you all are to talking to me and helping me find my footing here. Seriously, thank you.

And uh - as for what I want, I guess I want a chance. I want you to know I'm here for you all. It'd mean a lot to me if you'd know that. And if you'd reach out with anything actionable that I could do to make this place feel more like home. I've been enjoying learning about this place's history through those of you who have taken the time to talk to me and give me some context for the years I missed.

You see, despite my absence over the years, I really love this place. I do. And I want it to be comfortable for all of you, above all else. So I hope you'll take the time to respond to this to help give me some sense of where we're at and what direction we can take. And for those of you who have been doing this, thank you, truly.

I am disgraced by knowing that this site is full of child molesters apologists and I want my content deleted cause I'm embarrassed that I ever partook in this pit of evil site.

We discussed this earlier. I will get to this and comment back when it's done.

However, I think you writing off the users here as child molesters and apologists is quite the accusation that shouldn't be made without evidence.

DM me if you want to talk.

@Etiennne I tagged your post for slanderous intent. I probably shouldn't have asked you to justify your point, so that's on me.

These instances happened on the Discord recently, not the site, so I cannot take action against these users on the site, as per the rules. And! They didn't violate any rules or policies through having a political discussion with you.

I have to say, having read those specific discussions in the Discord, them taking a side that challenges Rittenhouse's actions does NOT support the heinous actions committed by the victims in the Rittenhouse case.

I think those users take a side against you to challenge your perceptions and ways of thinking. Dismissing them, blowing them off, and then making slanderous remarks towards them here does NOT foster better communication.

Quite frankly, I will not tolerate anyone talking to these users (or any other users) like this on my site, or in my discord. I'm open to you having a cordial discussion *with them* on this matter in whatever forum you and they see fit, if they're open to it, but you are not going to be allowed to come here and slander them in lieu of that.

Please abstain from bashing them and making claims about them like this.
They're not allowed to say rude things about you, you're not allowed to say rude things about them. End of discussion.

The general advantage of this forum over the Discord is that it lends itself better to long-form writing. You can see this with some of the gender-related posts from null. Makes for interesting reads, and can be a good place to really hone one's thoughts since generally, it being less instantaneous means you can afford to put more time into each post. The Discord is great in that you get more free-flowing conversations where you can speak more off-the-cuff, which also comes with its own set of pros and cons. I've generally enjoyed hearing from a number of people here on a lot of different topics, in particular about movies and video games.

The downside to the longer format response though is that sometimes when you're quoting and responding to various points, you could feasibly have a few other people post, so your response can visually appear a bit disjointed from the post you're responding to.

Adding to jet's last point, I think it would be interesting to have a secondary format here that allows turn-based conversation exclusively between two people. Like a private message but open to onlookers and with a sense of strict back-and-forth dialogue.

You can try to mention it in requests if you believe it is a good idea (and others would agree.)

I know there's a thread pinned here asking who you are and one in Nostalgia asking about your history with GT, but I want to know - what does GT mean for you now?

GT is a place where I can relax, ruminate, compose my runaway-freight-train thoughts into something resembling critical ideas, and provide discussion and support to others on the few subjects I am moderately educated in.

What's the value you find in being here? Or in the discord?

Specifically in terms of what the website does mechanically, it is a simple and accessible way for me to write textwalls and share them with the community in a reliable and portable way. It also provides a decent platform for having in-depth and long-term discussions.

The Discord can be good for having brief day-to-day discussion or more casual/personal talk. I currently do not trust it for personal talk, and there's hardly anyone there to speak casually with, so I don't really use it.

GT used to be a home base for me (literally and figuratively). I really do want that back.

What don't you like? (You can be honest)

Mainly, the uncertainty of what's going to happen to this place. In a more personal sense, just the fact that this place evokes some bad memories from rougher times, and that the sense of a civil community has been broken and not yet restored.

Mechanically speaking, it's also just kinda outdated and doesn't have a lot of quality of life that other places do, but I don't want it to be bloated either. I think I've brought it up before, how I essentially just want a more developed text editor. There's also some very interesting ideas about new/returning discussion formats being floated, and I'd like to see those explored.

Other proposed features like profiles and whatnot are cool, but I consider them unnecessary. What I'd mostly be interested in getting from a feature like that is an easy way to index my threads and posts. Right now, there aren't good ways of organizing multiple threads, let alone individual posts.

What do you want to see from me? (Be honest here, too)

Mainly, I want to see flexibility, growth and decisiveness. I want to know that my community leader will do what they need to in order to protect the community.

My momentary thorniness over certain issues aside, I don't think you're doing a particularly bad job so far.

This is pretty much my upside of gt currently as well as anything else currently GT related. The community is smaller and easier to interact with. I mean come on back in pointless, rpg, or wherever else you stayed in as a reg you pretty much stuck to that primary forum and maybe a few others, and alot of other stuff even just on the quicklinks was like walking into a foreign country. I miss the sheer choas of things getting pushed off page in 30 seconds however. Getting to really know the user base was hard.
