Feature requests and ideas, what can we do for you?

What would you all like to see here?

Posted 5 Days ago by Weird Occurance

What's relevant to your lives?

Should we add forums? Remove some forums?

What features would make you happy? Right now, Avatars are on my list, what else?

What sorts of conversation topics do you all find most interesting?

This site's for you all, so I'm hoping you all can make suggestions to make this place more appealing.

A functioning avatar system would be great. It's considered a standard on most forums for good reason.

Sexuality, politics, philosophy, media analysis.

I want more Worldbuilding content.
I don’t know what to do about it.
In other on-line content about game-developing and game-running I often find large-ish sub-chunks about Worldbuilding. It seems as important as character-building and plotting to some of them.
I’d figure most of our current users who actually develop games, or run multiplayer game parties, would like to spend about a third or so of their time on this board talking about Worldbuilding.
But if they do they seem to seldom put it on any of the Worldbuilding threads.

Ooooh interesting point! Game devs worldbuild too. I mostly think of it as an author exercise.

Back when I was really into writing, I sucked at worldbuilding.

I still suck at worldbuilding.

But would like to encourage more of it. I'm also not sure how.

It's on the list, so I'm glad it's a promising improvement. I definitely think we can benefit from it.

Sexuality, politics, philosophy, media analysis.

Thanks!

As someone who read your writing, you do NOT suck at worldbuilding from a reader perspective...

That's because my writing uses *minimal* worldbuilding.

Nothing like what I've seen in the forum here.

I was thinking that some game-oriented members may actually post Worldbuilding content but never put it in (nor even mention it on!) the Worldbuilding thread.

Maybe we could start this trend by posting about observed worldbuilding in books, video games, and movies and discussing it.
Right now it's a lot of worldbuilding ideas for people's personal projects. Let's expand it out a bit!

I am interested in worldbuilding from analytic, deconstructionist and cosmological perspectives, and I guess I would post about it in the Worldbuilding forum if that's where we decided that that kind of content should go.

I'd like to see this written out and then we can move it elsewhere if it makes more sense somewhere else, but I'm interested in what you have to say on the topic!

I did some worldbuilding recently for my next game project. Might scrap everything again as I get closer to actually working on it, but might be worth reposting what I have.

Xhin, galbraith and chiarizio; we welcome any worldbuilding you wish to add.

That’s an idea which is worth trying out, in my opinion!
So, maybe I could “critique” the Worldbuilding in some published work somewhere?
Would it have to be 21 or 50 or 75 years old before I could do that without its creator’s permission?
I can imagine there’d also be a lot of interest in work four years old or newer; and they might not want critiques by amateurs while they are still making money off their original work.

@galbraith, lord D., Xhin:
Thank you all for your thoughts, too!

Please do!

It's great to read description, but analysis is fun too! And yes, I think posts such as those would fit very nicely in Worldbuilding.

I don't think you need permission. A quick trawl through any e forum relating to Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings reveals plenty of amateur criticism, analysis and opinionising.

I'd like to read some of your critiques, too.

Under fair use, you can do worldbuilding critiques of anything, in the same way that you can review or analyze movies under fair use.

You can't write a story (for profit) in another author's universe, as that's no longer fair use.

But reviewing and analyzing and writing fanfic (stories in another writer's universe that you're sharing without making any profit off) is totally safe!
